October Gardening In The Southwest

Chrysanthemums set fall gardens ablaze with color. All they require is adequate water to prolong their majestic blooming period. Plant spring flowering bulbs when available. Mass colors for effective display in a large garden. Tulips are spectacular if planted in lots of 100 or more. Try new varieties.

The triumphs are outstanding and hardy. Still, my favorite small bulbs are the various colors of crocus. For real pleasure, try some of these, also ixia, anemones, alliums, chionodoxa, scillas, oxalis, and Galanthus. Prepare soil thoroughly; add liberal quantities of bone meal and peat moss.

If possible, plant bulbs on a cushion of sand for best drainage. Dig, divide and replant perennials. They need time to get established and develop roots for early spring growth.

Plant In Protected Areas

Plant perennial and biennial seeds in protected areas where winter mulch can be applied. Poppy, larkspur, and cornflower seeds need sufficient cold, usually freezing, to break the rest period. Pulverize and moisten the seedbed; cover seeds lightly and press soil around them with a board or hoe back. Water well with a light mist.

October roses are supreme in color intensity. This superior quality is a result of good garden practices. Winter clean-up for roses includes mulching, defoliating, and spraying.

Re-establish ground covers. Liriope, ajuga, trailing periwinkle, and English ivy are best for this area. Mix kinds to create interesting patterns of lightness and darkness.

Keep the garden well watered, for plants need to enter winter dormancy in top physical condition.
