Flowers to bloom each month in the Ohio area are easy to find once we look. This roundup was made in answer to a query by Mrs. E. C. Burke.
It includes only bulbs and perennials, and it by no means exhausts the possibilities.

Bulbs During March
In March, bulbs that show color are the following:
- Chionodoxa
- Crocus
- Galanthus
- Scilla
A few early violets can be depended on, such as early Johnny-jump-ups and Helleborus Orientalis.
Daffodils In April
In April, species of tulips, such as the Red Emperor, open with the earliest daffodils. Other tulips and narcissus will bloom as these fade.
Then we can have such stand-bys such as the following:
- Hyacinths
- Grape Hyacinths
- Star-Of-Bethlehem
- Trillium, Most Violets
- Primroses
- English daisie
- Virginia bluebells
Or we might try the less frequently seen:
- Actaea
- Alchemilla
- Erythronium
- Townsendia
Indeed, we want these:
- Perennial Alyssum
- Arabis
- Phlox Subulata
- Early Saxifrage
- Adonis
Tulip Month May
May is tulip month, with narcissus, lily-of-the-valley, myosotis, and doronicum adding their colors.
The additional plants include:
- Columbine
- Iberis
- Geum
- Anthemis
- Dianthus Caesius
- Dianthus Deltoides
Then there is:
- Centaurea Montana
- Oenothera

- Linum perenne
- Thermopsis
Host of Campanulas Opening In June
In June, a host of campanulas opened. We also look for the following:
- Delphinium

- Late Peonies
Examples of Dependable Plants:
- Coreopsis
- Gall-India
- Heuchera
- Hemerocallis
Also, consider the libes—Libes elegans, dauricum, candidum and regale.
Riot Of Bloom In Midsummer
Midsummer—July, August, and early September—sees a riot of bloom from the following plants:
- Hollyhocks
- Beebalm
- Phlox
- Canna
- Helianthus
- Gladiolus
- Dahlias
- rudbeckia
- Platycodon
- Golden glow
- Lilies auratum and tigrinum
These plants also open in July:
- Asclepias
- Bocconia
- Helianthus
- Penstemon Barham’s
Examples of highlights in August are:
- Hosta
- Physostegia
- Helenium
September finds dahlias at their peak, mums beginning their main season, and late hemerocallis such as Autumn Surprise coming into bloom.
Summer Flowers
In October, we still have many of the summer flowers, plus mums and asters.
November still yields late flowers from pansies and Viola cornuta and mums, Iris stylosa (Iris unguicularis), and Helleborus niger blossom too.
Even in winter, a little forcing will bring spring bulbs and such plants as astilbe and dwarf iris into bloom in the house!
